Health Benefits of Dog Ownership

by | 20/12/20 | Insights

We have had a fantastic summer, here in Ireland. It’s being joy to watch the OUTPAWS WOOF enjoy the great weather. So it’s only natural that winter is now starting to creep in fast. We are already experiencing some pretty cold and wet weather in September. So I thought it would be  good time to talk about the health benefits of dog ownership & dog walking, with  keeping us fit and healthy over the winter months.

  • Did you know that Dog owners enjoy numerous health and social benefits by walking their dog a few times a week?
  • Benefits include improved cardiovascular fitness, lower blood pressure, stronger muscles and bones (built up by walking regularly), and decreased stress.
  • Studies have shown that for overweight people/dogs, a 30 minute walk, three times per week can reduce blood pressure, increase energy, improve sense of well-being, and lower your weight by 5% and your dogs by 15%.
  • “People who did not own dogs had over three times the odds of being treated for diabetes than those who walked their dogs”, says Cindy Lentino, an exercise scientist at George Washington University School of Public Health and Health Services in Washington, D.C.
